Hello everyone! My name is Maanya Devaprasad, and I am currently a student advisor for the WWBPA. Today, I just wanted to share a few of my experiences these past few months. As a high school student in West Windsor, I have used this newfound time due to recent events to learn new things, cook, bake, garden, bike, and, most importantly, spend more time with my family. As I look back at the past few months, my most cherished memories happened either in the kitchen or at the park. In the kitchen, I have been trying to bake all types of desserts for my family, and I gave a few of my friend’s recipes a try. In the park, I especially enjoyed seeing all the members of our community walking and biking around. As I biked around the park with my family, I loved seeing so many other families walking or biking. Sometimes I even go on bike rides with my friends around my community because it is one of the safest activities we can do together during a time like this. Overall, I’m happy to see so many people outside staying safe while also trying to make the best of such an unforeseen time.
The WWBPA is once again seeking student advisors interested in working to make our community even friendlier for bicyclists and pedestrians. Applicants must attend West Windsor-Plainsboro schools or live in West Windsor and attend other schools in the area or be home-schooled. The deadline for applications is February 18 (Presidents’ Day), and terms are for one year (and are renewable).
Serving as a student advisor is an excellent way for students to make a difference in their community while developing organizational skills, helping to plan and publicize events, and learning to advocate before local government for improvements. The WWBPA’s activities this year included numerous bike rides and walks, a bike drive and a ?learn to bike? class. Students have considerable freedom to come up with a project that interests them. This is also a great way for any student considering a college major in environmental sciences, engineering or political science, among other areas, to gain some hands-on experience in their general area of interest.
It’s once again time to apply to become a student advisor to the West Windsor Bicycle and Pedestrian Alliance. Student advisors will work with its trustees over the next 12 months to help make our community even friendlier for bicyclists and pedestrians. Applicants must attend West Windsor-Plainsboro schools or live in West Windsor and attend other schools in the area or be home-schooled. The deadline for applications is February 20.

This year?s student advisors organized our community bike ride and helped promote our bike drive and “learn to bike” classes. As for coming year? Students have considerable freedom to come up with a project that interests them.

Congratulations to Kim Meersma, a WWBPA student advisor since the end of 8th grade and the recipient of a $500 college scholarship from the WWBPA.
In her essay, she wrote:
“As I have learned through my five years of experience as a Student Advisor, the best way to convince people of the importance of building a bicycle and pedestrian friendly community is to have them experience a bicycle ride or a walk for themselves. Through events such as the Community Bike Ride, and the walk to the Farmers Market, cyclists and walkers of all ages and experience levels are able to see that given a safe route, they are able to reach places around the community without a car.”
Kim is graduating from WW-P High School South and is headed to UMass in Amherst, where we hope she will continue to promote biking and walking. We thank her for all she has done for the WWBPA and West Windsor.
The WWBPA is delighted to have six new student advisors for the next year. They join Rachel Karp, a sophomore at WW-P North, who is returning for a second year. We’ve never had a group this big, and we are looking forward to their input, enthusiasm and the extra help with our many projects.
Our new advisors are:
Brandon Ling, WW-P South sophomore
Greg Ling, WW-P South sophomore
Sanjana Saksena, 8th grader at Community Middle School
Alisha Kanitkar, 8th grader at Community Middle School

Student advisors work with the Board of Trustees to plan events and advocate for improvements that help make West Windsor and neighboring communities more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly. This is an excellent way for students to make a difference in their community while developing organizational skills, helping to plan and publicize events, and learning to lobby local government.
All students in the West Windsor-Plainsboro school district and all West Windsor residents who attend other area schools or are being home-schooled are eligible to be student advisors to the WWBPA.

On a gorgeous Labor Day weekend, members of Plainsboro Venture Crew 814 (part of Boys Scouts of America), including WWBPA trustee Jerry Foster and student advisor Jason Chin, embarked on 24-mile bike trip along the Jersey Shore.
Starting from the city of Long Branch, they biked on roads along the ocean, through the shore towns of Sea Bright and Monmouth Beach and eventually into Sandy Hook National Recreation Area. Sandy Hook has over 5 miles of paths dedicated to bicyclists and pedestrians.
It was a very enjoyable and scenic ride through forested areas, along the beaches, and in view of New York City. After a few hours of relaxing on the beach and jumping the waves, they headed back 12 miles south to pack the bikes and enjoy the sunset on the Long Branch boardwalk.
Venture Crew 814 looks forward to another exciting year on the trails.
Monthly meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month via Zoom. We will eventually resume meeting in the West Windsor Municipal Building. Email us at [email protected] if you would like the Zoom code.
Find us at the West Windsor Farmers Market (Vaughn Drive parking lot) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every other Saturday from May through Halloween.
