In 2026, the all-volunteer West Windsor Bicycle and Pedestrian Alliance is celebrating 20 years of making our community safer and more enjoyable for everyone who walks, runs and bikes. In that time, West Windsor has been transformed from a town where few wanted to bike into one recognized for its growing network of bike lanes, sidewalks, trails, and safer crossings.
Highlights from our 20 years of advocacy include:
- MORE SIDEWALKS: Alexander Road in Berrien City (closed gaps) and along the S-curve, portions of Penn Lyle Road, Cranbury Road from Princeton Hightstown Road to Van Nest Park.
- NEW BIKE LANES: Southfield, Bennington, South Mill, Woodmere and Penn Lyle roads, Lanwin Boulevard, Village Road West, Canal Pointe Boulevard, Alexander Road by the S-curve.
- SAFER CROSSWALKS: Clarksville Road and Norchester Drive, Clarksville and Avalon Watch (now eaves), Windsor Haven and Bear Brook Road, numerous pedestrian-activated flashing yellow lights (“beacons”) at crosswalks.
- NEW TRAILS: the 3-mile Trolley Line Trail, the multi-use path along South Post Road, many trails through preserved open space.
- MORE AMENITIES: Extra bike racks and lockers at the train station, new bike racks in our parks and signage along the Trolley Line Trail.
- FREE COMMUNITY EVENTS: A weekly walking group, a learn to bike class for children, the Martian Bike Ride and the Ride of Silence.
- MORE MONEY: Township budgets in 2007 began including dedicated funds for sidewalks, bike lanes, and intersection upgrades. In FY2025-2026, the annual allocation totaled $850,000. This is on top of several million dollars in state grants over two decades for sidewalks, trails and paths.
Our efforts helped West Windsor become New Jersey’s first Bicycle Friendly Community (bronze level). We aim to reach silver in 2026.
But there is still more to do. We continue to push for safer U.S. 1 crossings, more pedestrian-activated flashing beacons, and the completion of the Cranbury Road sidewalk to the Trolley Line Trail, among other priorities.
While our board members have led this work, none of it would have been possible without you—our members, supporters and neighbors. Together, we have persuaded local and county officials to take action.
