We’re hearing complaints about drivers not stopping when a school bus has stopped, its lights are flashing and that red stop sign is sticking out to the left.
Please stop and wait for kids to get on or off the bus and, if needed, to cross the street. Yes, even if you are going the other direction on just about every street in West Windsor.
It’s the law (N.J.S.A. 39:4-128.1 for those who want to look it up). And it’s one easy thing everyone can do to make West Windsor a safer and more inviting place for everyone who walks.
We know – you say you’re in a rush. But the time you might save isn’t worth the risk of hitting a child. Even if that doesn’t happen, you could still get a ticket. Have you heard about the West Windsor Police Department’s “Adopt a School Bus” program?
Note that drivers separated from the bus by a median, such as on New Village Road, can continue to move but should reduce their speed and proceed with caution.
By law, cyclists follow the same rules of the road as drivers do so should also stop for school buses.
