The West Windsor Bicycle and Pedestrian Alliance awards scholarships every year to graduating high school seniors whose efforts align with our vision of making West Windsor a safer and more enjoyable place for people of all ages to walk and bike. That could include active commuting, encouragement, safety awareness or advocacy.
This year we have three winners, all of whom attend WW-P High School North. They are:
Shreya Karnam of West Windsor for her work on promoting the importance of being visible to drivers at night. Her initiatives, sparked by the death of a West Windsor 12-year-old who was hit by a driver, included the distribution of reflective stickers to her peers, displaying posters in the high school, arranging for the sale of reflective gear to families in her martial arts community, and writing morning announcements with safety messages for High School North and Community Middle School. She also became a WWBPA student advisor.
Bhaumik Mehta of Plainsboro for his essay on bike commuting. As a means of exercise and sustainability, Bhaumik persuaded his friends to join him on bike rides to school and to local parks and trails, leading to shared exhilarating and bonding experiences.
Erick Mendoza Rangel of West Windsor for his essay on encouraging others to bike. Erick discovered the joys of bicycling as a young teen and has sustained a weekly habit of bicycling for fun with his family for the past five years.
