Bridge work begins by the D&R Canal towpath near Mapleton Road

The D&R Canal State Park will be repairing the Millstone Aqueduct Bridge over the D&R Canal in Plainsboro (see red circle on map) beginning the week of April 24.

Access to the D&R Canal towpath from the D&R Canal parking lot off Mapleton Road will be prohibited during active weekday repairs. There will be a detour that uses the berm path to Harrison Street and then reconnects with the towpath there.

The good news: the bridge will remain OPEN on weekends.

The work, which is expected to take about three weeks (if the weather cooperates), should not affect those using the D&R Canal towpath between Harrison Street and Route 27 in Kingston.

A second project — repairs to the pedestrian bridge over the Alexauken Creek Aqueduct north of Lambertville — was completed in January. That reopens that portion of the D&R Feeder Canal towpath, which runs alongside the Delaware River.

However, the D&R Canal Feeder towpath remains closed further north between Stockton and Bulls Island, located directly behind the Prallsville Mill complex as repairs continue to the damage caused by Tropical Storm Ida in September 2021.

The D&R State Park Commission recommends that those headed north cross over the Delaware River on Bridge Street in Stockton and use Pennsylvania’s Delaware Canal Park towpath. Cross back into New Jersey in Lumberville to reach Bulls Island and New Jersey’s towpath.
