After three years of lobbying by the WWBPA, a new crossing is under construction between Avalon Watch apartments and the Village Shops on Clarksville Road. The project, funded by the New Jersey Department of Transportation and Mercer County, should make it safer for bus riders and shoppers to cross the road, particularly in the winter, when visibility is poorer. It includes a pedestrian refuge island in the middle of the road as well as an in-pavement lighting system and flashing signs. The work should be finished by the end of August.

Under Construction: Avalon Watch Crossing
The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) studied Clarksville Road in 2007 and released a proposal for improvements in its report, Taming Traffic: Context-Sensitive Solutions in the DVRPC Region, with West Windsor, NJ one of two focus locations. The proposal includes bicycle lanes and sidewalks along Clarksville Road. You can see the report at https://wwbpa.org/TamingTraffic.pdf
We agree that Clarksville Road needs more improvements and will continue working with the Township and Mercer County to make that happen. One idea has been to put Clarksville on a “road diet”, which would help slow down traffic and create more space for cyclists.
This is wonderful news, but what about a bike lane? Frankly, the road is just narrower now and the cars (who have no concept of the lanes along this road) are just closer to the shoulder of the road. Just sayin’…
